Chapter 7:  A Guide to Materials on The Coastal Zone Management Act Available on the Internet

The Coastal Zone Management Program established by the Coastal Zone Management Act is administered at the federal level by the Coastal Programs Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM). The OCRM has a website that provides information about the Coastal Zone Management Program at http://www.ocrm.nos.noaa.gov/czm/. Contact information for federal officials involved in the program can be found at http://www.ocrm.nos.noaa.gov/cpd/cpd_staff_list.html. The managers of the state programs are listed at http://www.ocrm.nos.noaa.gov/cpd/prgman.html. Program guidance documents can be downloaded at http://www.ocrm.nos.noaa.gov/cpd/.

NOAA's Coastal Ocean Program (COP), part of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), provides scientific information on management of coastal resources. Its website is located at http://www.cop.noaa.gov. NOAA conducted a year-long "Internet town meeting" that asked the public to envision what America's coastal areas should look like in the year 2025. The results of this exercise are available at http://coast2025.nos.noaa.gov. The U.S. Geological Survey has been involved in projects to protect coastal resources in the San Francisco Bay area. Lessons learned from these projects are available online at http://water.usgs.gov/wid/html/sfb.html.

Several states participating in the Coastal Zone Management Program have websites with information concerning their activities. The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management's site is at http://www.state.ma.us/czm/czm.htm. Hawaii's Coastal Zone Management Program's site is at http://www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/czm/. The website for Maryland's program is at http://www.dnr.state.md/us/.

In March 2000, the Congressional Research Service released a Report to Congress on issues involved in reauthorization of the Coastal Zone Management Act. A copy of that report is available online at http://cnie.org/NLE/CRSreports/Marine/mar-35.cfm. A website with extensive links to information about coastal management efforts throughout the world can be found at http://www.coastalmanagement.com.
